A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The New Aladdin Is Here And At Least One Of Our Wishes Was Granted

We’ve been waiting patiently, okay mostly patiently, since Disney announced that Aladdin was being remade. The cartoon remains one of the most iconic movies of all time, and the fact that they were going to try and bring it to life with real humans instead of the animated versions was kind of concerning.

We saw the first trailer a while ago, but the only character we actually saw up close was Aladdin himself. We didn’t see how the Genie looked, or Jasmine, or any of the other characters.

But now, Entertainment Weekly has given us all the first look at the new movie, and honestly, I still don’t know how to feel about it.

Jasmine actually looks pretty great. She’s got the same color-scheme as the original, and the actress looks basically identical to the cartoon.

Aladdin’s red vest looks a little bit more like a camping vest than the cartoon’s did. Also, if we’re being nit-picky, the cartoon version was purple. But obviously they have to change up some of the details so we aren’t going to judge them too harshly for that.

He’s not rocking the same no-shirt-vest combo either, which makes sense even though it doesn’t match the cartoon. No one could actually pull that off in the real world.

The Genie is the one that kind of caught me by surprise. I guess they didn’t want to paint Will Smith blue, but his MC Hammer-style jacket is pretty awesome.

The little top-knot-bun thing on the top of his head in the magazine photo is a little bit bizarre, but I guess it makes sense for the character, although it’s not in the behind-the-scenes photo shared. Don’t worry too much about this current look though, the director, Guy Ritchie, explained that the final CGI version is coming, so maybe there will be a blue version soon.

“I wanted a muscular 1970s dad,” Ritchie said. “He was big enough to feel like a force – not so muscular that he looked like he was counting his calories, but formidable enough to look like you knew when he was in the room.”

Smith spoke about how his version of the Genie is going to be a little bit different than Robin Williams’ version.

“I like the fact that our Genie has an ego and is a little bit vain and he cares about how he’s presented because he’s been doing this for a very long time,” Smith explained.

Not only did we get a look at the three main characters, the magazine also shared some set footage of what “Agrabah” will look like.

It’s the busy market you’d expect, and it seems like there are going to be a lot of stunts taking place for what I can only assume is the “One Jump” scene (one of my personal favorites).

The actors are all excited for us to see the movie when it comes out in May 2019, but for now Disney hasn’t given us all too much to go on.

Hopefully, we will get to see the final version of the Genie soon, but in the meantime we’ll just have to imagine it.
