Back in August, inTouch ran an exclusive story claiming that Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, and Holly Marie Combs, stars of the 90s WB hit show Charmed, were “in talks for a reboot.”
As you can imagine, fans got excited upon hearing this news, but unfortunately, Combs, who played Piper on the show about a coven of sister-witches who protected those around them from evil spirits and demons, killed the excitement after she took to social media to shut down the dubious claims.
“I’m sorry to say that all the reboot rumors are just that… rumors,” Combs wrote.
Shortly after, Milano, who portrayed Pheobe, gave an interview in which she backed up Combs, and explained in detail why a reboot wasn’t going to happen.
“I’ll tell you everything I know: the last few years, CBS Studios—not the network, the studio—has been trying to reboot Charmed without any of the old cast members,” she told The Daily Beast. “They just want to use the franchise because we have the best fans ever, they were up in arms over this and said you can’t do Charmed without the original cast members.”
However, she gave fans a little bit of hope when she said that the original cast is up for a reunion of sorts.
“The other thing that I know is that Shannen, Holly, Rose and I have all said out loud that we are open to some sort of reboot, reunion or something,” Milano continued. “The next thing I heard was that Netflix was doing it, but I heard that strictly from the media and not from my deal with CBS Studios or Netflix, where I have two shows right now.”
Now, mere months after the actresses shut down the possibility of a reboot, The CW officially announced that the show is coming back, but of course there is a twist.
For fans who couldn’t get enough of the badass Halliwell sisters, you’ll soon get your fix when the show returns for the first time since its finale aired in 2006.
However, instead of continuing the story where it left off, the reboot will be a prequel to the original show, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The new version written by Jessica O’Toole, Amy Rardin and Jennie Snyder, will take a page out of Stranger Things, and take the viewers back to 1976.
Since the plot is set decades before the original series, the original cast will most likely not be returning. However, we shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss the fact that Charmed was known for surprising fans with crazy plot lines, so anything can happen when it comes to the original cast’s involvement.
As far as the rest of the cast goes, no information about the characters or actors have been made available.
Since the news broke, some fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement:
I literally spoke a charmed reboot into existence and I couldn’t be happier

I am excited for the #Charmed reboot! I love the cast and the whole story of it all. I would love of it was of their children but this still sounds great! One of my favorite series growing up!! It started me in the whole fandom life and I regret nothing at all!!!
