Born André René Roussimoff, he was nicknamed “The Eighth Wonder Of The World” and the “Gentle Giant,” by many of his beloved fans, as he stood at 7’4 feet tall. His large stature was a result of gigantism caused by an excess growth hormone, which none of his other family members had.

After working with his father on their family farm, André moved away from his home in Grenoble to Paris, France and began training as a professional wrestler. The rest is history.
