Yep, you read that right. It’s not official or anything, but Fran Drescher herself has given us a little glimmer of hope that the iconic show The Nanny may be coming back in one way or another.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the premiere, and while it doesn’t feel like it has been that long, the fact is people are still in love with that show.
The sitcom ran from 1993 to 1999 and was created and produced by Drescher and her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson. It followed Fran Fine as she moved from Flushing, Queens to a British Broadway producer’s home to act as the nanny to his three children.
The show is filled with snarky comments, sarcastic quips, and even a bunch of physical comedy, but at the heart of it all there is a lot of love that went into this show from everyone involved.
Drescher remembers her time on The Nanny fondly, and credits it as why she’s been able to do so much in her life.
“People really love that show. It’s unreal.”
“It was a turning point for me in my career without question. [The show gave her the] ability to leverage celebrity for the greater good and [for] the things that I’m passionate about.”
While we all know we are in the age of reboots and revivals, it means that people have been asking whether or not she’d consider bringing back those iconic outfits.
Her response has definitely caught our attention.
“We’re talking about it. Peter [co-creator] and I are talking about it. We’re working on a very big project. It’s going to be very exciting for the fans, but I’m not at liberty to announce it yet. But it’s gonna be big.”
If The Nanny did come back, Drescher has a few ideas as to what Fran Fine would be up to now.
“She would’ve maybe gotten involved in more things [that] Fran Drencher is involved with. All kinds of things from environmental issues, to health, to civil liberties, that’s what I think Fran would be doing now– opening her big Queens mouth for the greater good.”
She believes that if it continues they wouldn’t be able to just continue on the way they were.
“The thing is our show would be the same characters 20 years later. We can’t just pick up where we left off. But in a way, that could be really good because the show can have a whole fresh bend to it.”
As for if she’s actually willing to do it, she said”I mean, I’m waiting to get the call.”
So while it seems like it might be a little bit before we hear about this very secretive “big project,” we’re hoping that it’s something good!
The show was absolutely perfect, and there’s a lot you probably missed when you watched it the first time.
As for the rest of the cast, they’ve kept busy over the last 25 years.
