Sources told the publication Phillips had met with Phoenix prior to the new year, and had only been waiting on the studio’s approval.

However, Phoenix’s casting will not affect Leto’s role in future Suicide Squad sequels, as this is set to only be a standalone movie.

Phillips is set to be the director and co-writer on the film, which is rumored to take place in the 80s, and center around the Joker’s rise to power in the criminal underground. Sources add it will have the ambiance of “a gritty crime drama” compared to a traditional superhero movie.
