“The Heathers” Are Back To Terrorize A New Generation In The First Full Reboot Trailer

Once upon a time, long before Regina George terrorized her schoolmates at North Shore High School in the film Mean Girls, there was another clique that everyone referred to whenever the topic of mean high school girls came up: The Heathers.

In 1988, Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker starred in the dark comedy Heathers, which tells the story of a popular girl name Veronica Sawyer, who is unhappy about being a part of a feared clique made up of three other girls, each named Heather. She meets a psychopathic new boy, Jason Dean (Christian Slater), and shortly after, her popular classmates begin to die one at a time.

The film wasn’t exactly a box office hit when it was released, but it worked its way up to cult-classic status over the years, and now, it’s getting rebooted as a television show.

The reboot was confirmed in March 2016, and a year later, it was revealed that actress Selma Blair has been cast for a recurring role in the series, and that one of the original Heathers, Shannen Doherty, will guest star.

In August 2017, a preview of the upcoming series was released, and it featured Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, James Scully as J.D., Melanie Field as Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as Heather Duke, and Jasmine Mathews as Heather McNamara.

The clip also showed us that some aspects of the original will be incorporated into the show (it is still NSFW), but the newest official trailer tells us that there are many other details that won’t be the same.

While the series appears to still have the same dark and twisted vibe as the original flick, and even includes the classic lines like “f–k me gently with a chainsaw…” and “suck my third nipple,” the new mean girl clique is very different from the one we knew back in the 80s.

In the 2018 version, the terrifying group of gal pals are very diverse, but still mean as ever. Heather Chandler is all about promoting body-positivity as a social media influencer, Heather McNamara is a lesbian, and Heather Duke is portrayed as genderqueer.
