9 Famous Co-Stars Who Actually Hated Each Other In Real Life

NBC / New Line Cinema

Sometimes we watch a movie or a show and are blown away by the bond the characters have. Pop culture history is teeming with characters like these. Scully and Mulder, Chandler and Joey, Jack and Rose...

So it's always a shock when we find out that not only did some of these duos not have a particularly strong bond, some of them absolutely hated each other.

Here are 9 of the most famous costars who broke our hearts with their real life feuds:

1. Clarke Gable and Vivien Leigh (Gone with the Wind)

Gone with the Wind is considered by many to be the greatest film ever made. Gable and Leigh's portrayals of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara continue to enchant viewers almost 80 years after its release. But what many don't know is that Clark and Vivien weren't very fond of each other during filming.

Vivien reportedly hated kissing Clark because he had bad breath. Whilst this was seen as an issue stemming from the teeth he had to replace after years of smoking, a technician on set reported that Gable sometimes ate garlic right before his kissing scenes with Leigh.

As if this did not annoy her enough, the film's director reportedly had her breasts taped after Gable complained they were not to his taste.

2. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City)

These fictional New York BFFs entertained viewers for years on the show Sex and the City.

But in real life, the story couldn't be more different. The feud started a decade ago when, after being refused a raise, Cattrall began to distance herself from the rest of the cast. Then, just last year,  Parker announced that plans to make a third Sex and the City film had been scrapped.

Although she did not give any reasons, it was quickly reported that this was due to Cattrall holding out for a bigger paycheck, a claim she denied when she mentioned she was tired of the toxic relationships on set.

After Cattrall's brother died, Parker offered her condolences which were quickly rebuffed by Kim posting on social media that she "did not need her love or support".

Guess that movie is never happening. At least, we'll always have Samantha, Carrie and that gray pubic hair scene.

3. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook)

The two reportedly did not get along on the set of The Notebook. Gosling thought he had no chemistry with his costar and threatened to quit if she was not fired. The film's director even tried to host a mini-therapy session with them, which ended with the two screaming at each other.

Eventually, the movie was made and Gosling and McAdams became friends. They later went on to date for several years.

4. Betty White and Bea Arthur (Golden Girls)

Despite playing senior pals, Bea Arthur and Betty White famously never got along even until Arthur's death in 2009.

White speculated this was because of her cheerful attitude which Arthur couldn't stand while others claim it was Arthur who was upset that despite her being considered a better actress, White snagged an Emmy award before she did.

5. Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard (Iron Man)

Terrence Howard played Robert Downey Jr.'s sidekick, Captain Rhodes, on the first Iron Man movie. But when the sequel rolled around, Howard was nowhere to be seen. Instead, there was Don Cheadle, presumably paying the same character.

We're still not sure exactly what caused this very obvious split, only that Terrence Howard was very, very mad. Howard claimed Downey had him fired from the franchise when he asked to be paid fairly his Captain Rhodes role. In response, Downey Jr. said, "I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very, very much."

6. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio (Romeo + Juliet)

Danes, who played a young Juliet, reportedly found DiCaprio who played her on-screen Romeo, irritating and immature. She especially hated the pranks he played when cameras stopped rolling. There was no love lost on DiCaprio's side either as he found her reserved and uptight. Although they played passionate lovers, they made sure to avoid any communication while making the movie.

7. Bill Murray and Lucy Liu (Charlie's Angels)

Murray was fired after constantly berating Liu's acting skills on the set of the movie. Tensions came to a head when Murray stopped in the middle of a scene, pointed at Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz saying, "I get why you're here, and you've got talent," and then pointing at Liu and saying, "But what in the hell are you doing here? You can't act!"

Reacting to that, Lui flew at Murray and the two traded punches until they were physically separated. Murray was fired (or quit, depending on who you talk to) shortly after and was replaced by Bernie Mac.

8. Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill)

Chad Michael Murray and Sophie Bush famously met and fell for each other while playing on-screen love interests in the popular show One Tree Hill.

They were married a year later. But just five months later, the couple split up, supposedly due to Murray cheating on Bush with Paris Hilton. They were quickly divorced but were forced to act as lovers on the show for 4 years after that. Ouch.

9. Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren (A Countess from Hong Kong)

Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren easily had one of the most bitter off-screen feuds. They started off with petty remarks, like Loren telling Brando she could see his nose hairs.

However, Brando soon took it too far by patting Loren on the behind, leading her to threaten him with a slap.

Brando also complained that Loren's breath smelled "worse than a dinosaur's" and when their feud reached a fever pitch, he bit her so hard during a kissing scene that she bled afterwards.

Did you know about any of these feuds?
