MTV Is Bringing Back The Time-Traveling Reality Show No One Asked For

People Magazine / MTV

Did anybody ever catch MTV's The 70s House in the early 2000s?

MTV

The show only ran for one season in 2005, probably because of its absurd premise. It took 12 people (6 men and 6 women) who thought they were going to be on a The Real World-style reality show, but what they got was something entirely different.

MTV

Instead, they were stuck in a 24/7 simulation of living in a house from the 70s! Every day a Charlie's Angels-esque disembodied voice would give them tasks to do, with each member of the house losing points any time they didn't keep things authentic to the 70s.

MTV

The show's producers would try to trip them up too; they would leave things like Madonna albums from the 80s lying around the house, and if someone didn't comment on it like "I've never heard of this Ma-donna" they'd lose the challenge and maybe be eliminated!

MTV

While the show wasn't a success, MTV clearly thinks there's still potential in the concept, because they're bringing it back for an entirely different decade; it's coming back as The 90s House.

The details we have about the show are already pretty weird...

The jump between the 90s and the modern day has been pretty massive in a lot of ways (not the least of which is thanks to smartphones), and MTV seems to want to capitalize on this for The 90s House.

MTV

Again, 12 contestants will think they're signing up for a regular reality show, but instead will have to give up all the technology and advances millennials have come to expect while living in a house that's straight out of the 90s.

They'll also compete in challenges featuring catch-phrases, fashion, and technology from the decade, with the winner ultimately taking home an appropriate $90,000, as well as a Mazda Miata and two VIP tickets on a 90s-themed cruise.

Mix Tapes

Of course, it wouldn't be a 90s-themed show without some 90s mainstays, and it looks like MTV has us covered there too. They've announced that *Nsync's Lance Bass and singer Christina Milian will be hosting the show! They also have a ton of guests lined up, including Mario Lopez, Michelle Williams, Joey Fatone, Marques Houston, Tyson Beckford, Bill Bellamy and Joey Lawrence.

Trailer For New Nickelodeon Documentary Has Your 90s Favorites Spilling All The Secrets

Nickelodeon wasn't just a television network, it was basically a generation. Kids all over the country were bonded in this weird little family, obsessing over shows that our parents just couldn't possibly understand. They were for us. They weren't made to appeal to our parents, they were made for our enjoyment and so we felt a special connection to them unlike any other shows.
