Does the name Tina Majorino ring any bells? If it doesn’t then perhaps the name Molly from the 1994 film Corrina, Corrina will refresh your memory.
A then-nine-year-old, Majorino played the role of Molly alongside Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg. The film wasn’t a box office success, but it gave Majorino the boost she needed to get noticed as a rising star and one of the most talented child stars to come out of the 90s.
She also starred in various other 90s movies including Andre (1994), When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) Waterworld (1995), and in the 1999 TV movie Alice in Wonderland. Majorino also added a few TV credits to her resume before vanishing from TV screens at the end of the decade.
As the case often is with many child stars, Majorino started to feel burnt out. She struggled with balancing fame, money and growing up under the limelight. However, instead of turning towards drugs or alcohol to help her escape, the young actress opted for a sabbatical.
Five years after leaving Hollywood behind, Majorino returned to Tinseltown in 2004 with her talent still intact, and scored some of her best roles to date.
In 2004, 19-year-old Majorino took on her breakout role in the 2004 offbeat comedy film Napolean Dynamite. She played Deb Bradshaw, an unpopular glamour shot producer who later develops a crush on Napoleon.
Since her return to the spotlight, Majorino found success in all the projects she took on. She played the brilliant computer expert Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie on all three seasons of the show Veronica Mars. Rob Thomas, the show’s creator said in an interview that he created the role with Majorino in mind, after she interviewed him for a report she was working on a few years before the show aired.
Majorino also held a reccuring role on Big Love before nabbing the lead role in the short-lived ABC TV show The Deep End in 2009.
Her subsequent TV appearances include Bones, Castle, True Blood, Grey’s Anatomy, and Legends.
Majorino also made apperances in a couple of music videos for songs by Lifehouse and Pink.
In 2012, Majorino reprised her role as Deb in the animated TV adaptation of Napoleon Dynamite, and lent her voice for six episodes.
More recently, the California-born actress once again portrayed Mac in the Veronica Mars movie, which was released in 2014.
Today, Majorino is still putting her skills on display for the small screen. She has recently been cast on Scorpion as Florence, a chemist and troublemaker who lives next door to a team of genius computer experts.
At 32, she’s built quite the filmography for herself, and by the looks of it, she’s not going to stop anytime soon.
