We All Remember Our Monchhichi Dolls, But Everyone Seems To Forget There Was A Cartoon
I think we can all agree that there are some toys that are just more popular or memorable than others. The Monchhichi toys were super popular when we were kids, and while we remember them fondly, we don't really know much about them.
The Monchhichi franchise was first launched in Japan back in 1974 as an update to an older toy called the "Kuta Kuta Monkey". They were apparently created to "inspire respect and love in the young children".
The name is supposed to be a combination of "Mon" (french for mine/my) and "Chhichi" which apparently is based on the sound a pacifier makes when a child uses it. When it's read in English it basically comes out sounding similar to "monkey".
In 1980, an anime series as created about the characters called Monchhichi Twins. It wasn't until three years after that that these little monkey-type creatures officially made their way to America. Mattel bought the license and Hanna-Barbera created a show that would help sell the toys.
Kids loved the toys but apparently not enough. Mattel stopped producing them in 1985, but it eventually had a little resurgence in the early 2000s. Even though they weren't on the market for long, they still had a huge fan base who seems to still remember them fondly to this day.
But how could you forget about the show?
The show aired with The Little Rascals and Richie Rich Show and had a bunch of different Monchhichis as the stars of this animated series. The characters all lived in the land of Mochia.
The tribe leader was Wizzar
He was a magical wizard who was an expert at making potions, and was in charge of leading the attacks against the enemies
The bad guys were the evil Grumplins of Grumplor
There were other characters as well including Snogs, Shreeker, Snitchitt, Gonker, TooToo, Patchitt and a bunch of other Monchhichis that filled up the town.
The toys were loved by kids. They were so cute and had a bunch of little outfits you could put them in. They were honestly one of the best cuddly of the 80s.
